Monzanto Sound
Monzanto Sound are a South East London-based music collective fusing together different styles from the African Diaspora and combining them with a hypnotic, psychedelic edge. Traversing through jazz-inflected funk, psychedelic trip-hop and cosmic neo-soul, they connect the dots using pulsating grooves, hypnotic polyrhythms and soaring vocals.
I’ve worked with Monzanto Sound as a vocalist, songwriter and producer since 2020. Over the years, we have performed at renowned venues across London such as The Jazz Café, Islington Assembly Hall, Avalon Café, Peckham Audio, The Servant’s Jazz Quarters and many more. We have also released three musical projects including our album ‘The Channel’, which debuted in August 2025.
Landing as one of The Observer’s ‘albums of the week’ amongst the likes of Ethel Cain and The Black Keys, ‘The Channel’ was a reflection of our growing confidence as musicians, artists and collaborators. Pepper Dem, Slick Talk, Midas and Oracle - four distinct tracks from the LP - were our selected singles. Showcasing our ability to traverse from irreverent funk to head-nodding soul, brooding melancholia to psychedelic sonics, the record is a genre-blending amalgamation of moods and experiments.
With co-signs from Soweto Kinch, Peter Curtin, Tom Ravenscroft and Deb Grant, ‘The Channel’ is a project I am immensely proud of.
Our first releases, ‘Tomorrow, Tomorrow & Tomorrow’ (EP) and TT&T Remixed (EP) were testaments to our first years as a collective: playful and curious whilst we worked to discover our sound. Songs like Nuff Blues (ethereal neo-soul meets trip-hop) and The Fool (contemporary dub with whimsical flourishings) were especially well received, with radio play from some of our favourite DJ’s such as Don Letts, Jamz Supernova and Huey Morgan on BBC6 and BBC1xtra. Deeper cuts like The Letter (hypnotic krautrock) and Eja (psychedelic & funk-inflected afro-beat) found their place on the NTS Breakfast Show or indie stations across the globe, from Australia to Ghana.
On TT&T Remixed, we were honoured to collaborate with friends like Natty Wylah and legends like Dave Okumu who found inspiring ways to re-interpret ‘The Fool’ and ‘Eja’. The EP’s are available to listen to on all streaming platforms. Vinyls are also available on our bandcamp.
